Schraubenfabrik — self-styled "Mother of Coworking" — opened in Vienna's Leopoldstadt in 2002, making it one of the world's first coworking spaces and a landmark in the global movement. The name means "screw factory," and the building's industrial past is still very much present: cast-asphalt floors, soaring ceilings, and raw factory bones give the space a loft aesthetic that no amount of Scandinavian flatpack can replicate. Around 50 long-term members — entrepreneurs, NGOs, and independent creatives — share a workspace that balances genuine community with room for focused, heads-down work. A 100 m² terrace is a rare find in central Vienna, offering outdoor space most city-centre offices simply don't have. Schraubenfabrik sits within a courtyard off Lilienbrunngasse 18, giving it an unusually quiet character for its central location. The space is also part of a growing network that includes sister space Markhof and international coworking partners — rooted in Vienna, connected further afield.
Lilienbrunngasse 18/2, 1020, Vienna, Austria
Schraubenfabrik sits in Leopoldstadt, Vienna's 2nd district — historically one of the city's most layered neighbourhoods, and now one of its most sought-after. The area has evolved into a hub for independent businesses, cultural venues, and a growing food and café scene, while retaining a distinctly local, non-touristy character. The courtyard setting on Lilienbrunngasse gives the space an almost village-like quiet, despite being just minutes from the centre. Schwedenplatz — one of Vienna's main U-Bahn interchange stations (U1 and U4 lines) — is within easy walking distance, connecting the space to the rest of the city in under ten minutes. Tram lines running along the Ringstraße and Praterstraße further extend the commute options. The Danube Canal promenade, popular for cycling, running, and al-fresco socialising, is also close by, making the area as pleasant for after-work unwinding as it is for getting to work.

A great co-working space in a pleasant environment. I found it particularly appealing that there was room for both exchange and community, as well as for retreat and focused work.
