Norrmalm is Stockholm's city centre, the grid of streets between Stockholm Central and Kungsträdgården. Östermalm is the quieter alternative to the east and Vasastan the residential one to the north.
Norrmalm grew north of the old town as Stockholm's commercial centre. Sergels torg sits at its middle, with a glass obelisk and the Kulturhuset building, and Hötorget with the Konserthuset concert hall lies just to the north. Drottninggatan is a long pedestrian shopping street, and Kungsgatan runs east to west past the Kungstornen towers from the 1920s. Flexible space follows the same grid. Metro: T-Centralen is the interchange for the red, green and blue lines. Hötorget is on the green line at Kungsgatan and Sveavägen, and Kungsträdgården is the end of the blue line.
Trains: Stockholm C handles long-distance trains, commuter trains and the Arlanda Express. Commuter trains also stop at Stockholm City, which is linked to T-Centralen.
Stockholm Central The station opened in 1871 and is still the main rail hub of Sweden.
Konserthuset Ivar Tengbom designed the concert hall on Hötorget, which opened in 1926. The Nobel Prizes, apart from the Peace Prize, are presented there each December.
Sergels torg The square is named after the sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel and holds a glass obelisk by Edvin Öhrström.
T-Centralen (red, green and blue lines) serves most addresses. Hötorget (green) suits Kungsgatan and Sveavägen, and Kungsträdgården (blue) suits the park and the eastern end of the district.
