Publix is Germany's first dedicated house for journalism and the public sphere — a nonprofit mission hub in Berlin-Neukölln built from the ground up to defend independent media. The purpose-built 4,000 m² building at Hermannstraße 90 brings together roughly 30 permanent resident organisations — including Correctiv, Reporters Without Borders, Netzwerk Recherche, and Tactical Tech — creating an unusually focused community of journalists, researchers, and civic technologists. Coworkers share that ecosystem: access to professionally staffed video and podcast studios, meeting rooms, a canteen, and a panoramic rooftop terrace. The entire building is barrier-free across all floors. Beyond the desks, Publix anchors itself in the neighbourhood through Publix Thursday — regular free public talks — as well as fellowships and media-literacy programmes open to the Neukölln community. If you do your work at the intersection of journalism, democracy, and the open society, this is the building that was built for it.

Wait a second, it’s August 2025, and I need to tell you something… This place is everything a person submissive to capitalism could need to carry out the activities that pay their rent, surrounded by standard beauty, at a price that five years ago would have almost covered a vacation. But that’s not what I’m here to talk about. I’m here to talk about the staff, especially a recent arrival and the one from southern Spain, who treat people well on a regular basis. Yes, I know that being treated kindly, attentively, and with a smile on a regular basis is not something you expect in Berlin, but it’s happening, and it’s great to see. Look, I’ve got enough on my plate with work, and as much as I might enjoy my job, I feel so much better starting the day when I see people treating each other well, with kindness and courtesy, and… that’s happening here.

This is such an incredible building. It warms my heart to know this kind of support for nonprofit media exists, as you don’t find it everywhere! The design of the cafe and office spaces is very spacious, minimalist and generally well-done, and the coffee is good. What more could you ask for? Some seriously inspiring work from journalists happens in Publix and I’m grateful I had the chance to visit with a friend who works there. Everyone was very friendly, even though I was a visitor.

Cozy and rather nice place for working. The prices are pretty reasonable. However, there are a few drawbacks about this place I’d like to mention. Firstly, the attitude of staff, who acted very unfriendly and unhelpful taking into account that a lot of a people are there for the first time and need some advice. Secondly, there are only few sockets to charge your gadgets. Although I may understand it somehow, but if the place is advertised as a space for working and studying, I think it’s necessary to have a bit more charging stations. Thirdly, it’s not really a huge problem, but tables and chairs outside in the garden may look somewhat cute, but they are extremely uncomfortable and cold to sit on, it’s better not to put your laptop on the table as well, because it may scratch it. Despite all of this, this place has a potential and I hope that it will provide a nicer experience in the future.
